Course Description
Students will explore~
- Explore, develop and be challenged in the exploration of the fundamentals of art, critical theory and art history
- Be engaged in various studio projects that integrate history, theory and critical analysis throughout the year
- Experience an in-depth study of the elements of art and principles of design, art movements, time periods and famous artists
- Be introduced to or review charcoal drawing, water colors, collage, paper mache sculpture, color field study and clay modeling techniques
- Develop their abilities to make critical judgments about art using their appreciation and influences of various styles of art

Chapter 1: Art Introduction
Lesson 1.3 – Observing Art Da Vinci Style
- Students learned that Leonardo Da Vinci was an artist who invented things. In addition, he would carefully observe what he saw. Students observed and created a sketchbook like Leonardo Da Vinci.

Chapter 2: Gesture Drawing
Lesson 2.5- Create Your Own Gesture Drawing (Artist- Keith Haring)
Students learned about gesture drawing and the artist, Keith Haring. They applied what they learned into their own artwork. Students experimented with the properties and functions of gestures.

Chapter 3: Traditions in Art
Lesson 3.6- Native American Clay Bowl
- Students demonstrated the ability to create a clay bowl that emphasized good design based on the Native American Mimbres.
Chapter 4: Cultures in Art
Lesson 4.5 – Aboriginal Art Painting
- Students learned how to identify an Aboriginal person, cultures and beliefs.
- Students created a painting based on the designs of Aboriginal Art. Students designs their painting using some of the elements of art and principles of design.
Chapter 5: Positive and Negative Space
Lesson 5.3- Positive and Negative Space Painting
- Students created an artwork representing something that inspires them. They applied either a traditional or contemporary art medium.
- Students worked to demonstrate thoughtfulness in their composition and craftsmanship
Chapter 6 : Creating Space and Distance
Lesson 6.3- Drawing a Landscape (Part 2)
- Students demonstrated understanding of basic perspective techniques (overlap, position, size, detail). They demonstrated understanding of basic uses of color to create depth (saturation of color, atmospheric perspective, depth of color families).
- Students created an abstract landscape showing the illusion of depth.
7th grade your Keith Herring drawings are so fun! I like to see how each “man” tries to negotiate the space of the circle – you each approached this in a different way – seeing them in a group highlights each of your ideas. I noticed how each of you took the time to study nature in the Da Vinci drawings. Looking at your drawings I wondered why you each chose that topic? Did it have particular meaning for you?
